How to fish it

Fishing notes

Fish it anywhere. Under an indicator as an anchor, on the dropper below a dry, or on a tight-line rig through pocket water. When you do not know what fish are eating, this is the fly you start with.

About this fly

The most useful nymph ever tied, because it looks like almost everything and nothing in particular.

The Gold-Ribbed Hare’s Ear works because of what it is not: it is not a precise imitation of anything. The picked-out hare’s mask fur suggests legs, gills and movement all at once, so a trout can read it as a mayfly nymph, a caddis pupa or a small scud depending on what it has been eating.

The bead head adds the weight to get it down and a point of light to draw the eye. If you fish one nymph, fish this one.

Key features

  • Buggy hare’s mask dubbing suggests mayfly, caddis and scud at the same time
  • Bead head sinks it and adds a trigger point in the drift
  • Size 20 for pressured tailwater trout that turn down bigger nymphs
  • The single most versatile searching nymph in fly fishing
  • Works year-round on tailwaters, spring creeks and freestone rivers
