How to fish it

Fishing notes

Grease the leader but not the fly. Fish it to individual risers on 6X. If tracking it is impossible, trail it 18 inches behind a Parachute Adams and set on any rise near the dry.

About this fly

The pale morning dun caught halfway out of its shuck — the stage trout actually eat.

During a pale morning dun hatch, trout very rarely eat the dun. They eat the emerger, hung in the surface film and unable to escape, because it costs them nothing to take. That is why anglers watch steady rises and catch nothing on a perfectly good PMD dry.

This pattern sits in the film with a trailing shuck, in the two shades the naturals show — pale yellow and tan. Carry both; PMD colour varies enough between rivers to matter.

Key features

  • Imitates the emerger stage, which is what trout eat during a PMD hatch
  • Trailing shuck and film-riding profile — the natural cannot escape, and neither can this
  • Pale yellow and tan cover the shade variation between rivers
  • Size 20 for summer PMD hatches on tailwaters and spring creeks
  • The fix for steady rises that refuse a PMD dun
