How to fish it
Fishing notes
Two-fly rig under an indicator, this on the upper dropper. During an emergence, shorten the indicator and fish it in the top two feet. Takes are soft — set on any hesitation.
About this fly
A midge pupa with a flash collar — small, plain, and unreasonably effective.
The Massacre Midge is a midge pupa imitation built around the moment of emergence: a slim body, a bright collar suggesting the gas and gills at the thorax, and nothing else to get in the way. Trout in cold tailwaters eat midge pupae more than any other single food item, and this is a clean, honest imitation of one.
It fishes all winter and through every midge emergence in the year. In a box of tailwater flies, this and a Zebra Midge cover most of what happens below the surface.
