Two-fly rig under an indicator, deep. Use it as the visible half of a pair with a black midge above, and let the fish decide. Best in the first hours after a flow change.
About this fly
The Zebra Midge in white — for stained water, low light, and trout that need to find it.
The white Zebra Midge trades the naturalism of the black or brown versions for visibility. In off-colour water after a release, in deep pools, or in the flat grey light of a winter afternoon, a white body is simply easier for a trout to locate — and a midge pupa is small enough that trout will commit to an odd colour without much scrutiny.
Wire rib, bead head, size 20. It fishes exactly like the standard Zebra Midge.
Key features
- White body for visibility in stained water, deep pools and low light
- Wire rib and bead head — the standard Zebra Midge construction
- Size 20 matches the midge pupae trout eat all winter
- Bead head sinks it fast enough to reach fish holding deep
- Switch to it when a black or brown midge stops producing
