How to fish it

Fishing notes

Upper dropper on a two-nymph rig for general searching. During a baetis or midge emergence, move it to the top two feet of the column or fish it in the film on a greased leader. Very soft takes.

About this fly

The RS2 as Pat Dorsey fishes it — the single most reliable emerger on western tailwaters.

Rim Chung’s RS2 is a sparse grey emerger with a split tail and a wisp of wing material, and it has been quietly out-fishing more complicated flies for decades. It works because it does not commit to being anything specific — it reads as a baetis emerger, a midge pupa, or a small drowned mayfly, all of which trout eat constantly.

The grey version in size 20 is the tailwater standard. If you are fishing below a dam and only allowed one emerger, this is it.

Key features

  • Rim Chung’s RS2 — the benchmark emerger for western tailwaters
  • Sparse grey profile passes as a baetis emerger or a midge pupa
  • Size 20 is the proven tailwater size for pressured trout
  • Fishes deep as a nymph or in the film during an emergence
  • The one emerger to carry if you carry only one
